Important Particulars of the College

The College of Agriculture, Kalaburagi was established in the year 2011 & is celebrating 8th year of establishment. Kalaburagi district comprising both North-Eastern dry zone (Gulbarga, Afzalpur, Chittapur, Sedam, Jewargi talukas) and Transitional zone-1 (Aland and Chincholi talukas of Kalaburagi district) of Karnataka. Geographically college is located between 17 0 21’ 32” N L  latitude and   76 0 48’ 10”  EL  and  longitude at an elevation of 484  meters above MSL characterized by dry climate with an average annual rainfall of 737.25 mm. It is situated on Mumbai-Chennai main Railway line and about 200 Km away from Hyderabad metropolitan city. The district is blessed with many rivers and irrigation projects like Amerga in Aland taluk , Bennethora  and Gandorinala projects  in Kalaburagi taluka, Bheema lift irrigation in Afzalpur  taluk, Lower Mullamari and Chadrampalli projects in Chincholi taluk  with a total projected irrigation potential of 0.96 lakh ha. In addition to these minar irrigation projects many barrages were also constructed on Bheema and Kagina rivers for fulfilling the need of drinking water and also for future need of lift irrigation. Jewargi taluk of this district is also covered by Upper Krishna Irrigation project, a prestigious and one of the largest irrigation command areas of the country.  The district has a varied range of soil type majority of soils belong to moderately deep (75-100 cm) black soils derived from deccan trap. Soil texture includes Clay (>40.0%), Silt (23.5%), Sand (4.8%) with a pH ranging from 7.3 to 8.4.

Department of Agronomy

Practical learning opportunity and lab facility

In Agronomy dept. Ack the students will undergo crop production of this region such  as Pigeonpea, Green gram, Chickpea, etc.   Students will practically learn how to  prepare the land for sowing, how to use the different tillage implements, including sowing of different crops, cultural operations. In irrigation they will be doing different methods of irrigation, soil moisture measurements, water holding capacity of soil, infiltration rate of soils.  In weed management they will be applying different  herbicides to the crops, calculation of herbicides for unit area and water required, different types of spray equipments and nozzles.   In organic farming the preparation of compost, vermicompost, preparation of different botanicals for pest management, mulching for weed management. In rainfed agriculture  the different in-situ moisture conservation practices, such as contour bunding , inter terrace management, seed hardening etc. In experimental technique, the layout of the experimental plot, sowing, imposing treatments, recording observations, statistical analysis of data, interpretation and report writing.  In Geo informatics they use GPS, GIS, do georeferencing--- etc.  Established the both kharif and rabi crops cafeteria for students to learn the different crops growth stages during practical classes.

We have a well established agromet observatory at ZARS Kalaburagi. Students are going to learn the what is Agro meteorological observatory station, how to collect the weather elements/parameters like max and min temperature, rainfall, evaporation loss, wind speed, sunshine, anemometer , soil temperature, humidity etc.

Laboratory Facility

  3. Many charts related to Agro–meteorology, irrigation water management and cropping systems aspects are displayed in the lab for students use.

 Crop Production program:

For the time being the crop production activities of students is being done on KVK land, since there is no separate land for college. The land was marginal hence could not get enough profit from it. The do all the activities of crop production right from land preparation, sowing, thinning/gap filling, fertilizer application, weeding, plant protection from pests and diseases, harvesting and threshing.

Department of Bio-Chemistry
